Walk 2/51: Fistral to Towan Headland
Not only has the COVID-19 pandemic been a weird time full stop. It’s been a weird time to try and accomplish goals, especially ones that involve exploring.
But like photography, one can refocus a lense. From a wide angle to a macro view, seeing what’s around us close up and for what it is. Having the ability to drive around to different locations may have prevented me from exploring what was around me on foot and within and hour’s walk of my residence.
One of the first walks I started to complete regularly when I moved to Newquay was South Fistral Beach to Towan Headland. From Esplanade Road and back, the walk is less than 4km and doesn’t actually take that long. Unless you start looking for sea glass or you get distracted by the waves.
The best time to do this walk is around low tide so you don’t have to scramble over the rocks, but it’s still possible to do the loop at high tide. Although, there’s more beach available to maintain the adequate social distancing rule of 2m at low tide (important consideration these days!)
And if you want to make it more like a 5km loop, just make your way a little further to the World War I and II monument and Huer’s Hut along the coast.
